Stoner rock is making a comeback, but with a twist. This stuff is turned up loud and with more attitude than the stoner rock of the 70’s. “Prophet Kill” opens the latest from VA-based Pillbuster. The fuzzy guitars set against the heavy, yet clean, drums set the stage for cool vocals that complete the mix. “A Parting Gift” comes along and uses the same method and pattern as the opening track, so much so that it is hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. “Hateburn” incorporates the fuzzy guitar and drums of the earlier tracks, while letting the bass turn it up a bit. This song takes on a bit of a classic rock feel with the chugging riff underneath the verses. Title track “Brothel” is a heavy song that brings all of the weapons the band has to the table. The pounding rhythm section, mixed with the guitar riffs and the vocals create one of the better tracks in this foursome. They are already writing songs for a 2015 release – can’t wait to see how they build on this collection.
