Some discs don’t grab me upon a first listen, but draw attention to themselves after a couple spins through. The debut from Ferras is one of these discs. Opener “Speak In Tongues” seems a bit mellow and controlled for this artist and for the initial track on a release. Listening through, you realize this guy can sing and is simply warming you up for what is to come. “No Good In Goodnight” has a cool vibe that incorporates a great pop-dance sensibility while blending in the smooth vocals that took over the previous track. “Champagne” gives us another glimpse at the artist, as he puts an electronic spin on his music, creating a dance floor track that will keep everyone on the floor with a great rhythm and beat that plays well against the vocals. “King Of Sabotage” is another mellow track that allows Ferras to demonstrate his ability to actually sing and not rely on tricks, machines, or the music underneath his voice. Disc closer “Legends Never Die” features Katy Perry (who released this disc on her new joint venture with Capital Records). This has a cool groove and dance undertones that keep things light, while giving the disc and Ferras a little depth. Relying on Ms. Perry and her genre of songs would have been the easy out, but this song heads in another direction and is one of the better tracks on this short EP. It will be interesting to see where this artist heads musically after opening one of the bigger tours this summer.
