Shane’s Music Challenge: SOPHIE B HAWKINS – Tongues & Tails
7/10
Proof that pop music can be edgy, cool and have longevity when it’s done well, Sophie B Hawkins’ debut album glimmers with a high-production sheen which almost covers up the darkness lurking in the shadows of her psyche, whilst never riveting the record datedly to any one time period.
Forever reminding me of an old girlfriend, Samantha, who possessed a similar beguiling voice, captivating talent and ethereal presence – not to mention a similarly dark angel as her muse – Tongues & Tails features Hawkins’ biggest hit, the irrepressible Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover, but is full of great tunes, including California Here I Come, Saviour Child, the sexy Listen, Live & Let Love and the mystifying Don’t Stop Swaying.
I’m not so sure about the ‘getting intimate with Mum in a dream’ lyrics in Carry Me – but I’m sure it’s all very symbolic and not meant literally!
