THE DOMNICKS – I Wonder What You’re Doing Now/Cool Runnings [Double A side single]
Citadel, 2012
By Shane Pinnegar
9.5/10
The Domnicks have a pretty bloody awesome pedigree to them, featuring Perth rock royalty both homegrown and adopted in the form of Dom Mariani (The Stems, The DM3, The Someloves), Nick Sheppard (The Cortinas, The Clash), Howie Shawcross (The Elks, The Jackals, Dave Warner) and Marz Frisina (The Chevelles, The DM3, New Egyptian Kings).
In this double A sided single they serve up 2 slices of perfect guitar pop – one each from the pen of, and sung by, Sheppard and Mariani. Musically both are immediate, hook filled, and simple – in some ways reminiscent of early 60’s Rolling Stones recordings, or even the very early Bob Marley sides: simple in the sense of a purity of melody and sound, a reliance on musicianship and a tuneful ear rather than studio trickery or a wall of sound.
Sheppard has said these are the two most accessible songs on their forthcoming album, and that live they have a bit more grunt to the band – but on the strength of this single, they’ve already hit gold. Get it while you can!
