I found Mary Lambert by accident while reading a press release for the upcoming Gavin DeGraw and Matt Nathanson tour. A little research on Google and youtube found me contacting a friend at Capitol regarding a review of Mary’s music. This EP, released in December 2013 is an eclectic piece, as it offers to supreme full blown tracks and two instrumentally backed spoken tracks. If you only want the music, you can skip tracks 1 and 4, but if you do, you are missing half of the fun on this disc. “She Keeps Me Warm,” co-written by Mary along with Macklemore and Lewis, is one of the coolest love songs I have heard in a long time. The way Mary’s voice mixes it up with the piano really draws you in and keeps your attention. The rest of the band joins in and thankfully that voice and piano duet stay in the front of the mix. “Sarasvati” is similar in that the piano adds to the vocals and vice-versa. This simple track, isn’t simple at all. The lack of a band does not correlate to any lacking in the song. The lyrics are as dynamic as Lambert’s vocal delivery on this track. Getting back to the spoken tracks, they are essential in the understanding of Mary Lambert and where this disc comes from. These tracks do feature an instrumental piece and chorus behind the spoken words, but the magic is in the rant. “Body Love Part 1” and “Body Love Part 2” come from within… deep within. The words spoken take a stab at capturing what millions of people deal with daily – we can only hope they get to hear these words and feel a little solace and realization. I cannot wait to hear what comes next for this artist. If this EP is any indication, we are all in for a pleasant surprise. All I can say is thank God for this accident.
