It’s almost laughable how many times I get an email, Facebook post, or Facebook Message telling me I should check out a bands EP. To be honest, most don’t get past the first song. I get it – I like BVB and you think you sound like them or I interviewed Sevendust and you are the next best thing. This is usually NOT the case. Here comes another email…
That all said, this three track EP is really good. Let’s be clear: I have always dug good female fronted rock, have a sweet tooth occasionally for the poppy side of life, and I like most modern alternative rock (or whatever the different label mongers are calling it these days). Along comes Varna, who combines the things that are really good about both. The music is heavy enough to be considered metal, yet radio friendly at the same time. The band plays really well and with some well done female vocals, this thing is all killer-no filler.
Let’s forget the immediate comparisons you want to make. All of the tracks here come across the speakers and grab your attention with their paced attack. There is no sense of urgency to crush a riff, note, or fill. These are all very solid tracks that feature great playing and vocals. The rhythm section delivers just enough punch to keep this songs flowing while the guitars and vocals duet nicely from start to finish. With all the positive, you are probably asking yourself why I only gave it 9.5 out of 10. It’s quite simple… there needs to be more!!!
