“New shoots from old roots” says the blurb on LITTLE DEVILS’ Facebook page, and that’s exactly what you get from this great modern blues EP. Like the 60’s R&B boom before them, Little Devils hail from London, England, yet play a very stylish take on American blues.
In this particular instance there’s a lot of 60’s and 70’s reminders: Good Times is a sassy juke joint stomp made for a Rocky Horror-styled stage show; Hang My Head is a bluesy folk song that brings to mind Buffy Saint Marie’s seventies work; No Love Lost’s flute trills, stabbing horns and great bluesy guitar solo sound like a modern Buffalo Springfield; Walking Disaster has a cabaret musical feel with its jazzy base and on Another Pack Of Lies singer Yoka channels Janis Joplin doing gospel!
Serpentine riffs and snakey horns, sassy and slinky vocals with a jazzy edge, and a band as sharp as a cut throat razor all add up to a damn good time, and despite all these old time influences to the music, there’s nothing retro about Little Devils – their influences all gel perfectly on About Time, and sound very hip in the now.
