John Lee Hooker and Howlin’s Wolf special continues Perth Blues Club 20th year celebrations: Tuesday, October 9
*The classic hooks and howls of two defining Blues icons will grace the stage in the Perth Blues Club’s John Lee Hooker and Howlin’ Wolf Special. Performed by leading local Blues artists, classic Hooker guitar-stomp numbers, together with the Wolf’s distinctive harmonica refrains, continue the Club’s 20th birthday celebrations.*
Indigenous Blues guitarist, Patrick Woodley, and sidekick, David Milroy, take on John Lee Hooker’s repertoire, while Dave Billings, on harmonica, and Dave Brewer hit up Howlin’ Wolf. Bridging the two, new young talent, Tayo, and veteran Bluesman, Ivan Zar, take the middle slot to mix it up.
Supported by the City of Vincent, the John Lee Hooker and Howlin’ Wolf Special is one in a chain of Special Events cued up to mark the Perth Blues Club’s 20th year of continuous operation, every Tuesday night, come rain or shine.
Uniting young and old artists and sounds of every creed and colour, the Club continues its steadfast tradition of promoting fresh and seasoned local talent through a genre of music that has heavily influenced many contemporary offshoots from rock’n’roll onwards.
One of THE Blues legends, John Lee Hooker (1917-2001) created his own style of “talking-blues”, derived from early Delta Blues, as he grew up in Mississippi and Tennessee. Best known for “Boogie Chillen”, “I’m in the Mood” and “Boom Boom”, as well as his live appearance in the 1980 Blues Brothers movie, Hooker’s driving and boogie-woogie style has become a staple of both traditional and contemporary Blues music.
Similarly, a legend but different, Howlin’ Wolf (1910-1976) is ranked in Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Artists of All Time” with his unique voice and 1950s Chicago-Blues songs, such as the inimitable “Smokestack Lightnin'”, “Back Door Man”, “Killing Floor” and “Spoonful”. An imposing hulk of a man with a booming voice to match, The Wolf, born Chester Arthur Burnett, has had a unique influence in defining what the world today sees as the Blues-standard.
Get your measure of Hooker and the Wolf at the PBC, 9 October, 8pm, Charles Hotel, members $10, non-members $15.
