MOTORTRAIN – Straight Six EP
Vanity Music Group, 2011

6.5/10
Hailing from “the middle of nowhere, Oklahoma”, MOTORTRAIN play rock n’ roll – 2 guitars, drums, bass and voice – nothing more, nothing less. Combining the heads down dirty denim boogie of AC/DC, the supercharged rock n’ roll belligerence of Motorhead, and the Southern groove of Junkyard, this debut EP catches the mission statement of the band from their eponymous opening track with the bullish lyric “Rock, rock, Motortrain Rock!”.
And Rock they do: Backyard Brawler has all the menace of a street fighting early Rose Tattoo, whilst She’s Hot continues the Antipodean referencing in being almost a homage to Bon Scott era AC/DC.
Bad Girls is an unsubtle love song to tattooed rock chicks, whilst closer Goin’ Goin’ Gone was written for “a girlfriend who turned out to be a complete bitch” who wanted a song written about her , and features the similarly unsubtle refrain “I’m Goin’, I’m Goin’, I’m gone – you always wanted one, I hope you like it, here’s your song”
Subtle they may not be, but Motortrain do rock hard, and this is a pretty good teaser to get their name on the map – bring on a full length album!
