Most mid-weeks tend to be semi lame, but not this one. To be able to see one of Rock and Roll’s legendary artists performing for the second time at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN, was definitely a bucket list item for me. Getting onto the stage with a 9-piece backing band that has toured. Filled with delightful candor and, at moments, self-deprecating humor about age, Roger Daltrey was in full force this evening. This evening was filled with amazing cover selections, highlights from his catalog with The Who, and tons of solo material. He made sure to have something for everyone. When I got to the venue, the amount of fans already lining up, all decked out in The Who shirts from past shows attended, I knew everyone was where they needed to be. The first song of the evening definitely got the night rolling in the perfect direction with a cover of his The Who bandmate, Pete Townshend’s hit song “Let My Love Open the Door,” a great cover of the Taj Mahal song “Freedom Ride,” and The Who’s “Who Are You,” Every song selection for this show was beyond amazing. Everyone on that stage was playing to simple perfection and enjoying what they do which is always a pleasure to see as an attendee.
Before Daltrey and the band started into The Who’s song “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” Datlrey commented on the synthesizer parts and how he didn’t have that with him on this leg and let his backing band member Katie Jacoby perform all of those keynote parts on her violin and it absolutely stunned myself and everyone there. Her solos on this track and “Baba O’Reilly” near the end of the evening was simply jawdropping in her delivery and execution. The show started to wind down for the night and then Daltrey jumped into a very boisterous rendition of the classic Neil Young song “Rockin’ in the Free World” and closing out the evening with a classic Tim Hardin track “Tribute to Hank Williams” since we were after all in the Mother Church. Even at 82 years old Roger Daltrey still has every bit as much talent and excellence as when he started. He helped prove that age is just a number and rock in roll is forever.
