Needtobreathe is out on tour in support of their 10th studio album The Long Surrender just released on March 27th. They stopped at Skyla Amphitheater Saturday night with opening act Drew and Ellie Holcomb. Sweltering heat in the upper 90’s set the backdrop for the event. The small venue was the perfect setting for an up close, personal experience. Drew and Ellie started things off with their heartfelt lyrics, uplifting but grounded with real life experience. They alternated songs from Ellie’s solo career with Drew’s band, The Neighbors. They turned things over to Needtobreathe as the sun was settling with some relief from the heat. The band came out, gathered around a mic center stage and played an acoustic version of “The Long Surrender.” They proceed with songs from their extensive playlist featuring influences of country, rock, folk, gospel and Americana. One my favorite part of the evening was when Bear Rhinehart came out in the crowd during “Multiplied” interacting with fans taking selfies, giving high fives and fist bumps. He circled the venue and went up and down every walkaway to make sure everyone had an opportunity to interact. They wrapped up the evening with encores featuring Drew and Ellie Holcomb on “Spread the Ashes” and “Promised Land.” The finale was “The Outsiders” and then fittingly a cover REM’s “It’s the End of the World as We Know It.”
