Upon hitting the stage to an almost max-capacity house, The Reverend Horton Heat immediately proved their extreme level of amazing showmanship and talent that has endured for over 40 years. This was the third time I have been fortunate to catch a Rev Heat show, and I have been highly pleased with them. The room was a mix of the usual random cast of fans, ranging from punk rockers to rockabilly, of all ages. They jumped into songs “Bullet” and “Baddest of the Bad” to start the night off right before playing a brand-new song, “Rock N Roll Is Now.” The night was filled with a wonderful mix of all of the well-known songs, as well as a few covers. There wasn’t really a bad moment in the evening. I always love hearing my personal favorite Heat song “Galaxy 500” live. Throughout the evening, like true Rev Heat showmanship, Jim Heath took time to tell various funny anecdotes and stories from over the years of being in the band. Near the end of the main set, local musicians Austin John and Arjuna “RJ” Contreras of the band The Hi-Jivers came onstage to guest perform with the rest of Rev Heat with an extended cover of Jimmy Preston’s song “Rock the Joint.” It was really neat to see RJ come out because he was a former member of Rev Heat and is a phenomenal drummer. The sheer joy and energy felt from everyone on that stage was amazing. They finished the main set with “Psychobilly Freakout” and “Devil’s Chasing Me” before leaving the stage for a short time.

When they came back on, Jim Heath switched it up and got onto drums and let the current drummer, Jonathan Jeter, assume guitar duty to perform a song he and Jimbo Wallace co-wrote called “Gravel Farmer” before finishing out the encore with “Bales of Cocaine” and the always amazing cover of Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades.” After the night was done, Jim came down from the stage to talk and chat with adoring fans of all ages.  Watching him chat with a very young fan about the show, he pulled out a guitar pick from his pocket and gave it to him, and then had a photo taken. The happiness on that child’s face said everything, and you know that would be a momentous point in his life, and he will forever be a lifelong fan of Rev Heat. This band is always something to see live. I will absolutely try to catch them again.
