GRACE BARBÉ AFRO-KREOL ANNOUNCE ONE-OFF SHOW IN MARCH WITH NEW MUSIC IN THE MIX
GRACE BARBÉ AFRO-KREOL ANNOUNCE ONE-OFF SHOW IN MARCH WITH NEW MUSIC IN THE MIX
Currently touring with The Cat Empire on the Red Hot Summer Tour with Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins, The Cruel Sea, Kasey Chambers and Jess Hitchcock, Grace Barbé has announced her own special one-off performance at Mojo’s on Friday, March 6.
Grace’s last Perth show was at Clancy’s Fish Pub in April 2025. With guitarist Jamie Searle back from his music work in Tanzania and Grace on a short break from the Red Hot Summer jaunt in early March, it’s the perfect storm for a homecoming show in Fremantle.
The show will be a rare occasion to savour the joy of the Grace Barbe Afro-Kreol experience. Since joining The Cat Empire in October 2022, life has taken Grace to all points in all directions, playing to full houses and big festivals across Europe, the US and Australia.
“I pinch myself,” Grace says. “The last three years have been incredible, intense and crazy all at once. I’ve never visited so many countries, in my life, in the space of three years. The opportunities just have been really incredible, honestly, more than I expected.
“It’s been three years of movement. I’ve been a musical nomad.”
Grace feels that the constant playing, the energy on stage and the connection with the audience, combined with the writing and recording of The Cat Empire’s recent album, Bird In Paradise, has brought the best out of her as a musician, with the title track short-listed in the APRA/AMCOS Song of the Year 2026.
It’s also motivated Grace to put plans for her own new album release in motion.
“The creative development has been just incredible,” she says. “I’m co-writing with The Cat Empire now, working on the next album, and potentially what’s to come after that. And you know, I’m also a songwriter, not just a singer and musician, but also a songwriter. So it’s really brought out and developed my songwriting skills even more. And it’s made me really think about where I stand in terms of my own album, my own project.
“Because it’s been like coming up to eight years since my last album, time flies, and I feel within my soul that now is the time to think about that next Grace Barbe album. I am really in a nice creative bubble, to be honest with you. Amongst what’s going on in the world right now, I am being trying to be as creative as I can.”
Grace hopes to record the album this year for a 2027 release. Fans will have the opportunity to hear some new songs at the one-off Mojo’s show, as well as a real showcase of Grace’s music from across the years.
“I’m really excited about the show,” she says. “I want to go back a bit. I want to go back and play songs from how it all started, the foundation, picking up songs from all three albums, bringing back that kind of psychedelic, rock’n’roll of the Grace Barbe Afro-Kreol project as well as introduce new material – letting the people who have supported us all these years know that there is still new music coming.”
Opening the evening will be award-winning singer/songwriter Alexia Parenzee – hailing from regional Western Australia her five-piece band is steeped in soul, roots and rhythm.
“She’s fantastic,” says Grace. “I love her songwriting. I love her vibe. I think Alexia and her band will suit the night really, really well.”
