There are shows – and then there are SHOWS. The mostly reunited Sex Pistols – Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock with Frank Turner centre stage on the mic – played a blinder in the rain at Freo Prison, with one of the most memorable shows we’ve attended in… well… ever.
Turner owns his new position – if he tried to imitate John Lydon/Johnny Rotten at all, then Lydon’s recent self-aggrandising media whinge-athon might carry some weight, but Turner doesn’t waste his time with the bitchiness, just gets out and sings his arse off.
The theme of the night is Never Mind The Bollocks – playing the entire (and their only true) album from start to finish, with a couple of extras from Greatest Rock n’ Roll Swindle getting an airing as well.
Rest assured that those siding with Lydon and calling this reinvention a waste of time have not got a clue what they’re talking about. Add in the prison setting, the rain and lightning setting fire to the sky behind the stage, and you’ve got a bucket list gig.
