On a Monday night in Charlotte, I found myself hanging out at The Underground bracing for a night of live music with not much expectation other than soaking in new to me music.  I had heard songs from headliner Spencer Sutherland and opener Cloe Wilder, but not overly knowledgeable about either catalog.  I made my way toward the photo pit camera in hand with eyes and ears wide open ready to bask in whatever the night had in store.  Opener Cloe Wilder nit the stage and proceeded to deliver a pop drenched set that had just enough angsty teen swirled with coming-of-age female wisdom to keep everyone smiling, dancing in place, and singing along at times.  The smiles on stage from Cloe, her guitarist, and drummer let us all know they were having as much fun as we were and the energy that flowed from and to the stage was proof positive that the evening was off to a great start.  She ran through her various singles, with a highlight being the recently released “Tallahassee” and based on the reaction she wasn’t the only one that knew the words of the track.  Next up was Stacey Ryan, who took the stage armed with a guitar, a keyboard, and a bass.  She played each throughout her set while she added to the pop feel of the evening.  She entered and exited the stage with sunglasses on, dropping them momentarily during her set.  Her metallic green top was purposeful as she made sure to explain she was in the St Patrick’s Day spirit. While sonically different from the opener, Stacey’s overall vibe enhanced the evening and nicely bridged the gap until the headliner would take to the stage.

Like clockwork, Spencer Sutherland and his band took their spots on stage and proceeded to deliver the drama on every level and it was exactly what the crowd that packed the floor in front of the stage wanted. With a new album The Drama to promote, Spencer wasted no time delivering energy laced with smiles from the moment he hit the stage.  His prowess on the stage added depth and punch to his show as he sang his ass off from song to song drawing us all into his modern rock opera.  Taking us from song to song with some ad libs and some crowd interaction, Sutherland had a lot of the audience eating out of his hand from the moment he hit the stage until the last note was played.  The contagious nature of the performance drew you in whether you came as a fan or left as one.  It was cool to see a performer – not simply a singer – so into the performance, strutting, swaying, and dancing from one side of the stage to the other and front to back.  He was having a blast and one by one gathered new fans, adding to the army that was at The Underground to see him perform. There was no denying the power of a great show being put on by a singer / performer that brought everything he had to the stage… and proceeded to leave it all there.
