A Dirty Dozen with SINA MATIX – March 2025
According to a recent press release: “Dark electro artist, SINA MATIX recently revealed their emotionally poignant debut EP, Cursed. The Cursed EP is set to the story of a person enduring a life-changing scenario having moved away from their home state, friends and a forty-year career. They are tormented by feelings of loneliness, worthlessness and misfortune. All of this leads to this individual feeling as though they are “cursed.” Uprooted from everything they’ve ever known, the story’s protagonist almost immediately falls into a divorce and losing custody of their one-year-old child. They now have no friends, no family and no escape. Meanwhile, anything and everything seems to go wrong. SINA MATIX comes from a background of doing visual music. They incorporate quite a few samples from movies and shows. They describe their sound as “Dark Dramatic Electro.” We get Sina to discuss new music, influences, and more…
1. Tell us a little about your latest release, Cursed. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets you put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
There are a lot of underscores and layers on Cursed. You will definitely have a different experience when listening to it on headphones.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?
My brother, Wolfe, was a Neuromantic Punk in the 80’s and he was my mian influence on music. He took me to see movies in the 80’s like Eraserhead and The Rocky Horror Picture Show leading toward the score side of my music. He also played New Wave, Punk and Experimental music around me, as well as took me to those types of concerts.
3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?
Top 3 albums that inspired me would be Fad Fadget GAG, Nine Inch Nails Downward Spiral, and Pink Floyd The Wall. Shows that inspired me were Nine Inch Nails shows in the 90’s, Mike Relm shows in the 00’s / 10’s, Pink Floyd The Wall in 1980 in New Jersey (only ever watched it on a VHS Tape), and Roger Waters The Wall Live 2010 and 2012.
4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?
Trent Reznor. He probably has the closest sound that I’m trying to achieve when it comes to Dark Dramatic Electro.
5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?
I always tell people that I create Dark Dramatic Electro, but since that is just a genre I coined, I have to resort to other genres. Genres like EBM, Darkwave, Goth, Industrial and film scores. I’ve only had a couple of review at this point, so I’ll have to get back to you on that one.
6. When your band is hanging out together, who cooks, who gets the drinks in, and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
Me, me and me. LOL! I’m the only one at this point that is part of SINA MATIX.
7. When was the last time you were starstruck and who was it?
When I met Bruce Campbell. Cinema is just as important to me as music. He has always been a role model to me when it came to acting. I was with my significant other at the time, we both went up to him to sign his book If Chins Could Kill. She talked to him the whole time while I just stood there with my jaw dropped the whole time.
8. What is the best part of being a musician? If you could no longer be a musician for whatever reason, what would be your dream job?
I’d be a Visual Musician. That’s what I was doing just before crossing over to the audio only world of entertainment.
9. What is one question you have always wanted an interviewer to ask – and what is the answer? Conversely, what question are you tired of answering?
What is Visual Music? I have such a huge passion for Visual Music and could pretty much tell you everything about it and how it dates back to the 1700s. Although, I wouldn’t stop typing for an hour and you’d have yourself a short story instead of an interview. I’m to new of an artist and this is only my 3rd interview. So, I’ll have to answer this one in the future.
10. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over,” even if it didn’t change your current situation?
The only thing that comes to mind is that I would have started doing Visual Music and Music at a much earlier age.
11. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
I don’t think I could. I fear that I would mess with the timeline and ruin that record as it is today. That album would be Pink Floyd The Wall. The Wall was so relatable and beautifully written. It will always be a part of my heart. So in other words, if I become a part of the recording sessions, I would essentially be tearing out a part of my own heart.
