Sophie Beer draws on her personal experience of hearing loss following the discovery of acoustic neuroma, a brain tumour requiring surgery.
Thunderhead is a kid who loves music but is having a crisis of faith as the date of her surgery draws nearer. The prospect of losing her hearing scares them more than anything, but that’s not all they’ve got going on – they’re growing distant from their best friend Moonflower and her new, bitchy friends and feeling completely isolated.
Thunderhead’s journey is endearingly touching and funny, Beer’s intimacy with the subject matter shining through, and her illustrations throughout are very cute.
