A Dirty Dozen with COREY PIERCE from DISCIPLES OF VERITY  – February 2025

| 18 February 2025 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “Disciples of Verity, fronted by the legendary Corey Glover (Living Colour), have unveiled their latest single, “Thread the Needle,” through TLG|ZOID and distributed by Virgin Music Group. Fueled by an insatiable urge to create and collaborate, this heavy metal incarnation seeks to challenge all that they believe to be true with their project, Disciples of Verity (DOV). The band features heavy hitters such as Corey Glover (Living Colour), Corey Pierce (God Forbid), George Pond (Negative Sky, Swim The Current), Mark Monjoy (Sekond Skyn), and Zack Miranowic (Sekond Skyn, Riversend).” We get drummer (and my longtime friend) Corey to discuss new music, influences, and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Well, the new single “Thread The Needle” is very much a representation of the entire album Nexus. It’s a pretty dark album based on the many crazy problems and decisions that everyday people face at this juncture in time. I think people are just going to listen over and over and get lost in the music and lyrics of this album.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

My mother was a musician and there’s musicians in my family and I kind of just fell into it. I think it’s something that just calls you and you either stick with it or you don’t. But if you’re really a musician you stick with it.

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

Now this real no specific song or album or performer or live show especially because my seats are very eclectic and my mother who was my primary musical influence growing up also had very eclectic taste. She was all over the place for Motown, to classical, to Dolly Parton or Kenny Rogers. She liked a lot of different stuff so I in turn grew up listening to a lot of different kinds of music and enjoying it all.

4. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Honestly that’s impossible question to ask I draw from so many musical influences that I don’t know if there is a top five but I can say Pantera definitely my favorite metal band of all time, Herbie Hancock is a huge influence, of course a lot of 80’s synth pop, Stevie Wonder of course, Prince and I mean really there’s too many to name. I am also a huge Hall & Oates and Heart fan.

5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

Prince. Because he was an absolute freaking genius that could literally play multiple instruments well and was just a ridiculously great songwriter. Plus, from what I understand he could really play basketball. Respect to Prince.

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

I can easily describe it as just very groove heavy and melodically driven crossover metal/rock. I really haven’t heard a bad comparison as of yet. So hopefully that doesn’t happen. Haha

7. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

I mean the best thing about being a musician is the will and capacity to create. Not everyone has a will or the capacity to have those sorts of ideas and dreams and then bring them to fruition.

8. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

I mean I like to barbecue so I guess if that were going to happen, I would be the guy cooking. Haha anybody in this band could be getting the drinks in at any given time. I don’t know about any sing-alongs happening, but I suppose if there was somebody it would be either Zack and or Mark, the guitar players.

9. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?

The last time I was Starstruck was several years ago, and it was meeting Rick James at The Rainbow in LA.

10. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Owner of a barbecue restaurant or barbecue truck.

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

I don’t know if there was any one thing that was like a misstep that would have changed my career, or I really would have done different per se. I kind of feel like all the decisions you make kind of lead you to being who you are now, and you had to learn those lessons so what’s the point of trying to go back and change them?

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Stevie Wonder Songs In The Key Of Life. I mean just being part of something that magical and that’s culturally impactful is a reward all its own.
