Jannus Live, nestled in the vibrant heart of St. Pete, Florida, was the place to be last Saturday night. Three heavyweights of the reggae-beach rock scene, Joe Samba, Bumpin Uglies, and Ballyhoo!, brought their signature sound to a crowd ready to groove out. The show delivered a high energy performance that left everyone buzzing, including myself. Joe Samba and his band kicked off the evening, immediately bringing the lively tone to the audience. His voice brought a raw, bluesy, yet grooving vibe to the crowd that commanded attention. His band, a tight-knit ensemble of seasoned musicians, set the tone for a far-out fusion of rock, blues and infectious rhythms that had the audience dancing from the first note. As the evening progressed, Bumpin Uglies took the stage bringing their feel-good flavor to the audience. Known for their unique blend of ska, reggae, and punk riffs, the Annapolis-based group did not disappoint. Lead vocalist Brandon Hardesty’s raspy vocals and candid lyrics connected with the crowd. Their mix of rock and horns brought a unique groove that I personally loved, with a trumpet, sax and trombonist jubilantly lifting the audience. As a trumpet player myself, this made my night.

For the final act, Ballyhoo! kicked open the shutters of excitement, riling up the crowd immediately. Rooting from Aberdeen, Maryland, I could tell this band had carved out a loyal and devoted fan base. Their songs, not only infectious and upbeat, but also relatable, even for myself. Front man, Howi Spangler led the show with charisma and a voice that in my opinion, perfectly embodies that beachy-punky vibe. When their top hit “Walk Away” from their 2011 album, Daydreams began to play, pandemonium broke out in the audience, fans singing and swaying to the feel-good lyrics and reggae riffs. The band’s setlist was a well-curated journey through their extensive catalog, featuring other hits like “Middle Finger” and “Mixtape.” Each song was a sun-soaked anthem, showcasing a synergetic bond with all the band members throughout the night. Jannus Live, with its open-air courtyard and intimate vibe, proved to be the perfect venue for this triple bill. The warm, balmy Florida night added an extra layer of beach rock magic to the experience. Crisp sound, vibrant lights, and an electric atmosphere for devoted fans and myself to never forget. As the last notes echoed through the crowd, it was clear to me that all three bands had left an unreal mark on the St. Pete music scene. For the fans of reggae rock, or those simply in search of a bangin’ time, a concert featuring these bands is a must-see. As the crowd dispersed into the night, I could sense there was a shared sense of joy and anticipation for the next time these bands roll through town.
