A Dirty Dozen with BRYANT AUGUST from ATRIUM – May 2023

According to a recent press release: “Rock band ATRIUM released their latest single “Above Water” to all major platforms via Curtain Call records on April 20, 2023. The single was written and recorded by Bryant August, Chad Szeliga, and Johnny K at Johnny K Productions. It was produced, mixed, and mastered by Johnny K.” We get Bryant to discuss new music, influences, and more.

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

This release is about questioning weather modifications. The song really builds with some different parts that are unexpected.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

My Uncle who is an incredible guitar player and electrician made me a guitar from different pieces of guitars when I was 13. It had a Vantage neck, Fender body, Ibanez pickups, all soldered on the inside by my uncle. He showed me how to play a “power chord” and the song “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana.

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

I watched my uncle play everything from Metallica to Van Halen in his music room. As a beginner guitar player, I wasn’t at that level but I started to learn Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, fairly quickly after lots of practice.

4. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Today, they would be: Alice In Chains, Sevendust, Tremonti, Beartooth, and A Day To Remember.

5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

Caleb from Beartooth. Why? He writes all of the songs, records all the instruments, vocals, and produces the music in entirety. Very impressive.

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

To me, we are hard rock. However, some PRs are going out as Metal. We have a little bit of Tremonti, Sevendust, Metallica, Megadeth mix of influences.

7. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Sending a message and creating a feeling through the creativity of music.

8. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

We are brand new, and haven’t been able to do much lounging yet. We have been putting all of our time and energy into writing and recording. I am really looking forward to relaxing with the crew though.

9. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?

I can’t remember.

10. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

A Lottery Winner.

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

I wouldn’t change anything, because I would not be who I am or where I am today.

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

This was a one off, but I would love to go back in time to be part of recording Army Of Anyone. That record was Richard Patrick from Filter, The DeLeo brothers from Stone Temple Pilots, and Ray Luzier from Korn.
