Things have come a long, long way since Casio launch their first electronic keyboard in 1979/80, and proto-players around the world noodled away to the automatic “doodoo-cha-cha doodoo-cha-cha” tinny backing rhythms.

Their new CT-S1000V is practically a symphony orchestra compared to those early devices, but is still remarkably portable, weighing in at only 4.7kg.

With hundreds of pre-programmed settings allowing the player to replicate different instrument tones, play automatic backing rhythms at an impressively wide variety of tempos, and even play pre-set or your own programmed lyrical syllables, this keyboard has enough firepower to get you making mellifluous noises in mere minutes out of the box. Heck, you can even just play the piano on it, if you want!

The CT-S1000V also has the ability to record a performance and play it back, record performance setups, and attach a wireless MIDI adaptor.

It’s the vocal synthesiser which makes the CT-S1000V stand out from the crowd. Everything else here has been done before on different brands and models of keyboards, but the ability to create choir-like or electro-vocals opens up a world of possibilities for players wanting something functional at an affordable price.

Retailing in Australia from $650, this keyboard gives you a lot of bang for your buck, and should be all one needs as a starter keyboard, or a home studio workhorse.
