Silversun Pickups have started their long-awaited tour in support of the 2019 release Widow’s Weeds. Like so many entertainers, the pandemic derailed live appearances. As they finally get to showcase their latest release, it will be on the heels of new material rumored to arrive in 2022 also by producer Butch Vig. The alt rockers from Los Angeles have 5 studio albums over their 20+ career. Widow’s Weeds is a bit of departure lyrically for the group as it gives deeper and darker insight to the band’s personal struggles, particularly lead singer Brian Aubert’s decision to get sober. Musically they return to more organic guitar sounds, moving away from the electronic layers of previous work. Following opening act Zella Day the band took the stage to roar of applause. Members included Brian Aubert lead vocalist and guitar, Nikki Monninger on bass, Christopher Guanlao on drums, and Joe Lester on keys. They opened with “Well Thought Out Twinkles” off their debut album Carnavas. From there, they played the best from each studio album together with three songs from 2019’s Widow’s Weeds. Though the small stage didn’t provide much production value, it allowed focus on what really mattered, the performance. They sounded amazing in the small venue. Nikki was bouncing up and down while playing bass, Christopher brought his usual high energy with arms and hair flying wildly, and Brian provided his trademark unique vocals and even did some twirls playing guitar. It was great to see the band in such an intimate setting. The fans were treated to an up close and personal performance by one of alt rock’s most durable bands.
