The Ivory Lies have released an EP (2018’s Road To Seduction) and the Drifting Away single, and now the time has finally arrived for their debut album to drop. The good news is, it’s a corker.
Ploughing a field midway between big-haired party rock and a darker, near-grunge heft, their sound is, if not completely unique, at least admirably well constructed and impressively huge.
Opener Hell For Leather gets the party started in anthemic, fist-pumping style. The aforementioned 2019 single Drifting Away is comfortably familiar, likewise Road To Seduction from that 2018 EP. New Obsession is another stomper, while Lipstick Letter is dark and down-tuned enough to hint at influences from Alice In Chains or early Soundgarden. Blue Collar Woman brings the party back, before this impressive album ends with the tongue in cheek horseplay of The Pinga Song.
The Ivory Lies have matured a lot since their first jams in their parent’s basements in 2014/15 – hell, this album is a great progression from their EP of only three years ago – and that’s what bands need: time to evolve and gel together, to learn how to write songs and finesse their recording process.
Take this album as a statement: The Ivory Lies are here. Brace yourself for more.
