It’s no secret that I am a total rocker at heart, but there is something about music with a rock and country tint that draws me in every time. The latest effort from King Calaway is four tracks of sonic goodness wrapped in modern country warmth and rock sensibility. Disc opener “Homegrown” is a feel good track that draws you in from the chugging riffs and solid tempo to the smoky vocals and feel good vibe swirled into the tracks DNA. This one gets me moving in my seat whether working on a tax return or driving down the freeway. “More People” slows things a pit and dials back the tempo and power behind the guitars, but not for long. The piano, acoustic, and vocal blend that carries us through the verse sets the tone for the chorus that kicks in and adds depth and punch to the track without dialing up any intensity proving that sometimes simple is best. “Heartbreaker” is all country from the guitars to the twang vibe in the vocals. The rhythm section kicks in and helps drive the song down the line. The drumming and bass anchoring the second verse stands out in the mix and helps keep the track flowing. Disc closer “Good Time To Me” opens with a great riff supported by a thumping bass line and some heavy handed drumming, but the twang twisted into the vocal rounds out the sound. While this track leans onto the country side, the rock and roll attitude coiled around the track cannot be ignored. The addition of Lainey Wilson on the track gives this song more attitude and country to enjoy without deviating from the path cut by the other songs, but rather giving us another sound and texture to enjoy on this EP.
