10 Quick Ones with REIGN OF Z – August 2018

| 8 August 2018 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “Reign of Z, with grass roots from Pittsburgh, PA is a combination of pretty and grit. Lead by vocalist Zosia West, the band combines a fusion of heavy guitars, and 3 dimensional vocals, taking a listener on a journey of beauty, true life stories and darkness, a new form of heavy music the band is getting coined for. The band describes music as the equivalent of breathing. It’s the one thing that allows them to feel alive. Hot off their return from the Shira Girl Stage on the final year of the Vans Warped Tour, Reign of Z will be co-headlining the Whisky a Go Go on August 10th with LA’s own, Black Valentine. That same day the band will be releasing their first single “Dysmorphia” off of their debut EP Mirrors and Memoirs produced by Steve Sopchak (Ice Nine Kills) due to release in early 2019.”  We get the band to discuss new music, influences, and much more in our 10 Quick Ones…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

“Dysmorphia” is our first song we did with a producer. Justin Spaulding up in Syracuse at More Sound is fantastic and we were able to get to know Steve Sopchak who mixed and mastered it. It has tons of layers with the vocals and a cool electronic part in both verses that’s actually Blink hitting the guitar string behind the bridge that we put through an envelope filter.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

Blink: I wanted to be a cult leader and figured this was the fastest way to do it. As of now I still have no cult. More research is necessary.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Green Day, Tool, Evanescence, Sevendust, and Every Time I Die

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

Zosia: Maria Brink

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

We like to mix the clean with the gritty

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Connecting with others through art. Meeting new people, seeing new places.

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Zach: I am definitely the acoustic guitar. Drinks are Blink and Nick and Berg does the food.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Blink: I’d be a mogul…maybe. Or cult leader.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

Everything has brought us to this moment. For better or worse we made it here.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

All those albums shaped who we are today. Zosia: Evanescence Fallen; Blink: Silverchair Diorama; Nick: ICP The Great Milenko; Berg: Black Sabbath; Zach: Sevendust Seasons.
