Relative newcomer Sydney Sherwood has written and released her second EP and this small collection of six tracks is packed with fun music and cool vocals that keep you engaged with each listen. Disc opener “Wolves” unfolds slowly with an almost tribal sound and vibe that quickly morphs and shifts gears becoming a cool rock track that benefits from some cool key changes and some great vocals. The song sets the bar for the disc, and Sherwood delivers. “Let Me Down” has a great groove and cadence that flows from open to close and benefits from the ebb and flow in Sherwood’s vocal range as she digs deep on some notes and takes us above the musical accompaniment for others. The track is catchy and has a cool vibe woven into it. “Creep” comes at you from another place sonically, but still grabs your attention and draws you in. The vocals on this song are some of the best on the EP. This track alone made me want to review the entire release. The rock vibe of the song works perfectly with the vocals and helps build a wall of sound feel that permeates most of the disc, but really stands out on this track. “Born to Roll” has the most varied opening of any song on the disc, but quickly falls in line and brings a rock quotient that swirls in the mix with a smokier vocal from Sydney… until the chorus hits. The vocal, music, and groove come together on the chorus to create a contagious track that begs you to sing along and join in the musical fun. “Horizon’s Edge” is a beautiful ballad that allows Sherwood’s voice to step out front and own the song’s spotlight. The stripped down instrumentation is the perfect platform for her voice to shine through and allow her to flex her range a bit. Be sure to catch the tempered guitar solo on the bridge. Disc closer “All The Aces” is the perfect bookend for the disc, as it swirls the rock parts, the smoky vocals, and the solid tempo that has been a constant on the entire disc. The chugging rhythm and riff gets the foot tapping and the head banging. I can’t wait to hear this song, along with the others here in a live scenario.
