With no opener to warm up the crowd, Keb’ Mo’ took over Ruth Eckerd Hall on a Wednesday night to a socially distant capacity crowd. With guitars in hand, Keb’ came with one intention… to entertain his fans with some great music. And entertain he did. From the moment he hit the stage with a beautiful steel guitar in hand until the final note was played, he gave it his all and then some. The fan favorites were all there, along with some added bonuses along the way. Aside from hearing some personal favorites like “Just Like You,” ”Government Cheese,” and “Oklahoma,” the most entertaining portion of his show was the banter between him and the crowd. The energy and love that passed from performer to audience and back again was incredible and a joy to not only witness but be a part of. At one point, a song suggestion was thrown out by an audience member and within a couple songs, he played the requested track, getting lyrics printed from his stage manager. He quipped at one point, “I know who I work for.” As he wove through the tracks, hearing these songs in their purest form with just Keb’s vocals, guitar, and his foot keeping time was truly music to our ears. The venue was the perfect setting for this stripped down show, as the acoustics carried the vocals and guitars sweetly across the audience and was as crisp in the front of the venue as they were up top, where I chose to finish out watching the show. While some tracks may get a boost from hearing them performed by a band, the depth of the tracks was more obvious while listening to Mo’ deliver the lyrics with emotion in his voice, across his face, and passing through his fingers. It doesn’t matter the setting, the situation, or the choice of solo or band show… make sure you grab your ticket and catch the show — you won’t be disappointed!
