In addition to some killer rock and metal, I love to switch the dial and tune in some funk at times.  The latest EP from Them Vibes is one of those collections that provides the necessary deviation from the rock.  Opening track “Powers Collide” is full of chunky bass lines and percussion fills that keep the track afloat and churning along underneath the guitars and vocals.  The vibe of the track (all five actually) is fun and most importantly, enjoyable.  They don’t force the sound or the vibe… they play funk from the gut.  “Time” is a contagious track that incorporates a funky groove, some killer guitars, a great vocal, and a party atmosphere that seems to seep from every musical note in the track.  The song gets you moving in your chair and doesn’t let up.  “Right On” featuring Maggie Rose is a funkified groove that comes at you from the first note and doesn’t let up.  While clocking in at under 3 minutes, the song packs a punch that will live on once the song has come and gone through your sound system (yes… I still have a sound system).  The breakdown is cool and the solid guitar work woven into the track is not to be ignored.  “Can You Dig It” keeps the vibe alive and gives us another track to appreciate, from the fun vocal to the guitar noodling in the background while the chunky basslines keep the song rolling along.  The layered background vocals laid over the chorus add depth, but be sure to listen for the mini guitar solos and horn interjections dropped into the mix.  Disc closer “Sinners Revelry” has a different sound and vibe that blends the bands funk feeling with a bit of that East Nashville Americana associated with their home region.  The vocals are cool and have a bluesy groove to them while the instrumentation gives us a new appreciation for the band both individually and collectively.  The great groove created by this short collection should play well in a live situation.  Let’s hope we get some of Them Vibes up here in Detroit soon…
