A Dirty Dozen with THE SIREN from ILLUSIONS OF GRANDEUR – October 2019
According to a recent press release: “Theatrical hard rock/fantasy metal band Illusions of Grandeur drop their debut album, The Songs of the Siren. The new album is out now via Pavement Entertainment and available to stream worldwide. Find Illusions of Grandeur’s latest release on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. The Songs of the Siren is a part of a larger compilation called The Siren Saga. ” We get The Siren to discuss new music, influences, and much more…
1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
The ‘Songs of the Siren’ is our debut album on Pavement Entertainment. Something fans may not pull away the first time that they listen is that it is a fully conceived concept album. Hidden parts of the album are that each song, while part of the storyline, can also be listened to individually and have a separate meaning outside of the story. We try to make sure that each song can stand alone. For us, it is about the song writing.
2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?
My dad got me into music. I went with him to band practice as a small child. I’ve known since I was 14 that I definitely wanted to be a musician.
3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?
No one specific song, album, performer, or live show guided my musical taste because I like a lot of different genres of music and performers. For me it is about the artist themselves and what I pull from their songs or performance.
4. Who would be your main five musical influences?
Korn, In This Moment, LED Zeppelin, Janis Joplin, and Queen.
5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?
Jonathan Davis, because he is a master at expressing emotion. I can feel him in his songs. I feel like I am a part of his experience when I listen to him sing.
6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?
I’d say we’re a mix of a lot of musical styles, sounding similar to In This Moment with the vocal dynamic of Korn’s, Jonathan Davis. People say we sound like Ghost, but I don’t hear it.
7. What’s the best thing about being a musician?
The feeling you get performing live. To me it’s euphoric.
8. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?
I cook, we don’t drink, and the whole band is always in for an acoustic session.
9. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?
Korn and Alice In Chains
10. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?
I don’t know because I couldn’t imagine not being a musician.
11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?
No not really. Everything I’ve done in my career has lead me where I needed to be.
12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
Janis Joplin or Queen
