Leaning into his garage band / punk rock roots as well as paying homage to his Detroit roots, Alice Cooper has pulled together a kick ass six-track EP that let’s him show off a slightly different sound and vibe than most of his musical fare. Disc opener “Detroit City 2020” is a redux of the track “Detroit City” from his 2003 release The Eyes Of Alice Cooper. The lyrics have been twisted and tweaked a bit to reflect more on Detroit. Sonically, the track is similar, but has a cool vibe woven into it that makes it seem less polished and proper. “Go Man Go” is a cool song that carries the garage band feel to another level, swirling a 60’s groove into the track as well. The musical accompaniment is the perfect match for the vocals, giving the song a great sound. “East Side Story” is an interesting track, as it sees Alice putting his spin on a Bob Seger track from 1965. The sound is great and keeps the vibe of the disc intact, while giving punch and power to the track, injecting that Alice spirit to the song. “Your Mama Won’t Like Me” is a nod to Suzi Quattro – who hails from Detroit, but found greater success overseas. The lyrical content is perfect for Cooper, as it seems to encapsulate the role which he strove to achieve back in the day… music for the kids, not the parents. The horns in the mix add depth to the track. The medley of “Devil With A Blue Dress / Chains Of Love” is a cool reboot Alice-style of the respective tracks from Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels and The Dirtbombs. The former track, “Devil With A Blue Dress,” has been slowed and while it has the same core sound and vibe, seems like a different track. The latter song “Chains Of Love” picks up the pace and compliments its medley counterpart. Disc closer “Sister Anne” is an interesting take on MC5’s song. The intro is cool and has a killer set of guitar riffs and licks that bring the song to the verse. The song allows Alice to sound modern while kicking in the vintage vibe and nuances of the disc. You never know how covers discs will turn out, but thanks to Alice’s appreciation of the garage rock genre and musical history of the Detroit rock scene, this comes off perfectly. The only downside to this one is there is no planned CD release at this time…
