Who can tell why good actors choose to star in average productions, but Alien Hunter doesn’t rate as James Spader’s finest achievement.
He plays science cryptologist dude Julian Rome, who is called in to the South Pole to help decipher a strange alien transmission emitting over and over, as the more inquisitive members of the science team attempt to open what is described as a “weird shell” from outer space.
Mercifully it’s only 92 minutes long, but for most of that time nothing happens, and it will come as no surprise that when Rome does decode the message (are spoilers a thing for a movie released sixteen years ago? If so, skip this bit) it’s saying “don’t open the thing, dumbasses!” (or words to that effect).
Alien Hunter isn’t a bad film – it’s just as dull as it is derivative, and a long way beneath Spader’s talent. It’s hardly a surprise that no-one else on the credits ring a bell as having achieved great things.
