Singer / songwriter Matt Record (yes, that is his real name) has pulled together a five track EP as his first release on the Captain Beardo Records label. Disc opener “Beautiful” gives us a glimpse into the artists head and heart with a great track that also showcases his emotional delivery of lyrics that strike from deep within. Title track “Black Swan” is another song that allows the singer to grab the reins and take the listener on an acoustic driven journey. The vocals bring us a little lower register and the tempo of this track is a bit subdued compared to some of the other tracks. The guitars that kick in near the chorus give the track some punch and attitude. “Insomnia” has a different feel and groove than other tracks on the EP, with more of an Americana feel. The guitars are full and drive the track from open to close. “Dear Lord” grabs your attention from the opening piano chords and the vocals that soon join the mix. When the guitars and other stringed instruments join the mix, this song really takes off and becomes one of the standouts on the disc. The way the different sounds are swirled together help this song rise above. Closer “Saddle Up” brings a soulful country feel to the short collection. While consistent sonically to the other songs, the addition of an electric guitar at the chorus and bridge add depth to the track and disc overall.
