Revelation Film Festival launches 2019 program

Curated once again by Jack Sargeant, the Revelation Perth International Film Festival sees a diverse selection of films drawn from across the world.

Boasting Revelation’s commitment to signature works, independent cinema, genre film, world cinema, and unique breathtaking movies, this year is no exception with a program drawn from Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Mexico, Uruguay, Japan and all points in between.

Featuring award-winning movies, world, international and local premieres, new Australian works and for the first time, a major conference and exhibition devoted to screen based technology, Revelation is a celebration of the strength of all aspects of screen culture.

Expanding across the city and wider community, Revelation plays a central role not just in the Perth calendar but also nationally and internationally.

Festival Director and founder Richard Sowada said that exploring new and emerging spaces was at the creative and organisational heart of Revelation.

“With the addition of XR:WA to the film program, we have the opportunity to bring VR, AR and games to local audiences in a way that is unique to Australia in a festival context.

“It is a truly innovative program structured around ideas of possibility and opportunity”.

XR:WA will debut at Revelation in 2019 bringing with it nine days of specialised programming full of VR and immersive experiences, playable games, live team VR gameplay, workshops, talks, screenings, 360 degree films and much more.

Revelation Academic sees scholars – from academic institutions and independent researchers – delivering papers and exploring cinema and visual culture, in the eighth instalment of this critical platform that remains utterly unique to any Australian film festival.

Revelation is acclaimed as Western Australia’s leading international film festival and annual screen culture event and is firmly established as Australia’s filmmakers’ festival. It is dedicated to presenting independent cinema from around the globe in a context that explores film’s great traditions, its contemporary movements and its future directions.

Highlights of Revelation 2019 will also include:

A special retrospective celebrating science fiction films with special screenings of classics The Quiet Earth, Things To Come, The Andromeda Strain and Alien;
Family friendly free screenings of animated short films from around the world with International Family Animation Explosion;
Industrial Revelations will feature some of the festival’s guests exploring key aspects of the industry at dedicated panels and workshops;
Blind Date – music video magic created by local filmmakers;
Screenwest’s annual showcase of emerging WA filmmaking talent in Get Your Shorts On!

Revelation’s special guest for 2019 is actor, presenter and campaigner, Adam Pearson. First appearing at Revelation alongside Scarlett Johansson in 2014’s Under The Skin, Adam also stars in this year’s film Chained For Life. A leading campaigner for the equality of opportunity for people with disabilities in the screen industry, Adam challenges the perceptions of disfigurement and disability.

Attracting audiences of over 21,000 people annually, Revelation continues to grow and has become the ‘go-to’ event for independent filmmakers, distributors and discerning audiences.

2019 will feature over 144 films, 18 world and international premieres and 60 Australian premieres.

The complete program is now online and tickets are on sale now from the Revelation website at and from Luna Palace Cinemas at
