When it was announced the Bob Seger was launching his ‘Final Tour’ there was speculation regarding the Detroit market, as his summer schedule was open and he had yet to schedule any shows at DTE Energy Music Theatre (f/k/a Pine Knob). In total, six shows were added over the course of two weeks and we were able to witness the sixth and final show of the run, which happens to be the record 33rd show by any artist in the venue’s history, prompting the venue to change its address to 33 Bob Seger Drive. As the moment approached for Bob and his band to take the stage, the anticipation and excite grew within the crowd. Kicking this final show off, he grabbed a different track than the other shows are ripped the set open with “Face the Promise” and you could see the excitement on everyone’s face from Bob himself to his band to the packed pavilion and the capacity lawn crowd. After the killer opening, The Silver Bullet Band launched into “Still the Same” and Bob delivered the song with precision and a smile. To hear him live once again was amazing, as he seems to get better every time I see him, regardless of his age. As we packed up our gear and retreated to drop our camera’s, “The Fire Down Below” came cascading through the sound system and the venue was awash with the band and audience in unison performing the track. Soon we were back to check out the rest of the set and other personal favorites dotted the musical landscape for the evening, including the one-two punch of “Old Time Rock & Roll” and “The Fire Inside,” both of which sounded better than anytime I have heard them before. While a couple personal favorite track were missing from the setlist, especially “Tryin’ To Live My Live Without You,” other great songs were played… “Roll Me Away,” “Her Strut,” “Beautiful Loser,” and one of my favorite rock tracks of all-time “Hollywood Nights.” The band was on fire and digging the evening as much as anyone in attendance. Other songs hit the setlist for a rare appearance like “Fine Memory” which has only been played a couple times this tour and “The Famous Final Scene” which has made slightly more than a handful of setlists. If you missed this, or any of the six final DTE shows, you really missed out as there is something special about a Seger show in Michigan, but keep an eye on the tour and hopefully he will get somewhere near you so you can experience the magic one last time when the tour resumes in September…
