A Dirty Dozen with ROB SCARPATO of DEAD BY WEDNESDAY – June 2019

According to a recent press release: “New England’s leading metal band, DEAD BY WEDNESDAY released their self-titled full length album on April 19th, 2019 through Combat Records/ EMP Label Group. The band has announced that they will be hitting the road as direct support for metal legends Flotsam and Jetsam this May/June in support of the new release on the Tour of Chaos 2019. In addition, DBW released their new video for the first single off the record titled “You & Die.” We get vocalist Rob to discuss new music, influences, and much more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Being a 4 piece band who prides ourselves in letting raw power and grit shine through both live & in-studio, we have to watch ourselves when recording because we feel there’s so much over-production out there now. So many bands “over-do” it in the studio and then simply cannot re-create that sound live without the help of pre-recorded studio tracks. We refuse to take part in that cop-out Milli Vanilli bullshit! That being said, there are some pretty cool vocal layers, harmonies, minor synth effects, cowbells, tribal drums and even tambourines on this album that someone might not pick up on first listen or unless wearing headphones, which we think is cool. It adds a mysterious aura at times that you can’t quite put your finger on, but it’s subtle enough that you won’t miss it Live. We also have all four members contributing vocally live for a subtly different – yet seamless performance. Subtle differences between live performance and studio recordings can be what gives a live performance it’s soul. People shouldn’t be paying money to go to a concert and hear a fucking Spotify track. I’m bringing it raw every night until I’m in the dirt.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

I found my dads Best of Deep Purple & Masters of Metal tapes in 1990 at 5 years old and I jumped up & down on my bed blasting from a boombox for about a week straight (laughs). Deep Purple’s “Highway Star” & Blue Oyster Cult’s “Godzilla” were the first tunes that gave me that devious shit-eating grin any true metal head knows and loves, even at age 5 I was hooked. My taste blossomed from the grunge era where I loved bands like Soundgarden heavier and heavier to more yelling – yet melodic type vocals like “Short Bus” from Filter. That brings me to a teenager where I discovered Deftones, Poison the Well, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Pantera etc. I do have to give credit where credit is due: I wouldn’t be a singer today if Chino Moreno didn’t kick so much ass! I literally wanted to be him (laughs).

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

My high school best friend & band mate Ricardo & I used to jam in his bedroom with two little Peavey amps after school. We’re talking like 13 years old haha. We finally got a band together and I started nailing some Deftones vocals pretty well and realized “I can do this!” I’d say albums like Adrenaline, Around the Fur & definitely Lamb Of God’s As The Palaces Burn – you can hear that one at times coming right through my face.

4. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Chino Moreno, Phil Anselmo, Randy Blythe, Jeffrey Moreira, and Howard Jones.

5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

Probably Howard Jones just because of how well we would blend. His band Light the Torch is crushing it and I think our new album style matches with theirs very nicely for a tour! Howard if you see this lets do this shit! Tell Joel & Adam D to get at me at Brass Cat!

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

Shotgun Metal. Meaning we spray across sub-genres however we deem necessary, but we stay in the realm of metal and heavy rock. We’re not quite as “broad” as a band like “Twelve Foot Ninja” who I love btw, but we blend everything from Thrash to Metalcore to Deathcore to straight up rock. Some people compare us to FFDP. I don’t necessarily cringe because if we get that type of success I’ll be the last one complaining; but I think we’re a bit broader spectrum of musical style than them that’s all. We also get compared to Slipknot, LOG, Pantera, SOAD too which gives me a proverbial hard-on.

7. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

The other night I had a fan come up to me and tell me how moved she was by our song “You & Die.” She said she was going through a really rough and even suicidal time with addiction, and that the song helped her through it. As an artist, this is truly the emotional paramount anyone could ask for. When your words not only reach someone’s mind or heart; but fix it or change it for the better, we’ll that’s the whole fucking point of art right?

8. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Cook? I must have traveled to an alternate dimension haha. We don’t cook for each other, not yet at least. I’m still waiting for my romantic road-dinner haha. Mikey Modeste can definitely put ’em back and so can I. I remember once we opened for Hatebreed and after our set we got so lit we ended up in the mosh pit all night. I was having fun just trying not to get hit in the throat! Opus and I actually write a lot of our material acoustically and then either translate the melody into a more metallic form, or leave it or something  in between.

9. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?

I don’t get star struck because we’re all just people at the end of the day.

10. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Pediatric Nurse probably. I absolutely adore the honest & “no fucks given” attitude of kids so having the opportunity to help kids in need would be awesome. I already have a BS degree in Biomedical Science and left straight As in nursing school to join this band so getting back on that path wouldn’t be the worst thing that could happen.

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

Funny you ask, because a hard time I went through with substance abuse is sort of the reason I am back in music after “working real jobs” after college and “going back to school to better myself” I was sad and even though I was having success in academics and such I was struggling internally and self medicating. It took a close call and brush with death to wake me up and realize that I knew my true calling and if I didn’t at least TRY to make it happen, I would never escape that regret. That wasn’t something I was willing to do so here I am.

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

As the Palaces Burn by Lamb Of God. Best metal album of all time IMO. So raw so powerful so political and so technical all in one! I would like to be a fly on the wall for Randy’s tracking techniques too!
