A Dirty Dozen with EMMA GARELL of EMMA GARELL BAND – June 2019

| 18 June 2019 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “Richmond, VA based THE EMMA GARELL BAND has released the official music video for “Destination Anaheim.” We get front woman Emma to discuss new music, influences, and much more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

Don’t look too deep into this – it’s all about sex drugs and Rock & Roll. Not really – I was just going for some straight up AC/DC rock & roll lifestyle.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

There really isn’t a moment – it was a gradual progression.  The more I practiced and performed the more I knew this was what I wanted to do.

3. Building on that, is there a specific song, album, performer, or live show that guided your musical taste?

Light Me Up Album by the Pretty Reckless and Black Sabbath by, you know,  Black Sabbath.

4. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Joan Jett, The Pretty Reckless, and Highly Suspect.

5. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

Dave Grohl – That would be a fucking awesome spiritual awakening.

6. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

Light Black Sabbath sprinkled with Robert Plant vocals and some AC/DC-Rage Against the Machine Guitar. Comparisons? That hasn’t happened yet. I’m sure it will someday though so I’ll try to keep the streak alive.

7. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

Being on stage and there’s that moment when you know you *got* the crowd.

8. When you have downtime and are hanging out with your band who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and how often is there an acoustic sing along or impromptu karaoke night?

We jam a lot & have a good time at rehearsals & gigs.  Unfortunately, everyone has real life commitments so we don’t get too many chances to just hang out together.

9. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?

Hands down it was meeting Johan Eckerstrom from Avatar at Welcome to Rockville in 2018.

10. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Marine Biologist – I’d really like to be able to support protecting marine wildlife even more as my career progresses.

11. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

Thankfully not yet – I’m sure it’ll happen though.

12. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for anyone record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath-it is the foundation of my musical passion.
