Almost a Dirty Dozen with DAN KECKI of EXIMIOUS – May 2019

According to a recent press release: “Central Pennsylvania Rock Band EXIMIOUS–comprised of former members of FROM ASHES TO NEW–has released their newest single, “Mind on Fire.” Formed in May of 2018, Eximious was founded by former From Ashes To New guitarist Dan Kecki and Drummer Brady Hearn. In late November of 2018, The band had then recruited former From Ashes To New lead guitarist, Branden Kreider.” We get guitarist Dan to discuss new music, influences, and much more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

The song “Mind On Fire”, was influenced by the game Minecraft, I was chilling with my kids why they played one day and liked the sounds in the game, so I incorporated some into my style of writing.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

I’d say like most teens in there early teen years, music was something that helped me get through the everyday struggles of transforming into a young adult, when I was 15 I had got my first guitar, not long after I had also attended my first real concert, which happened to be Linkin Park, I think that night is the first time I felt that that’s what I wanted my life to be.

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Korn, Deftones, LinkinPark, Slipknot, PapaRoach, even rap/hip-hop Eminem, Snoopdog, and IceCube, all kinda put me on the path I am on now.

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

In this day and age, there are too many good artists to choose from… if i had to make one choice I think I’d wanna get with Jellyroll,  he has a rock edge with gangsta style and I like it.

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before? What is the one comparison a reviewer or fan has made that made you cringe or you disagreed with?

Our music has so much variety depending on what mood you are in.. there is gonna be a song you like. As far as comparisons, somebody said we sounded like Nickelback kinda had a “what the fuck” moment.

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

I think the best thing about being a musician is making music that sets the soul free, I’ve spent hundreds of hours in the studio flowing out raw emotions that would have otherwise been trapped inside.

7. When you have downtime and are hanging out with your family, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and how often is there an acoustic sing along or impromptu karaoke night?

Well, I got nothing for this question. Maybe we are boring?

8. When was the last time you were star struck and who was it?

I don’t ever recall being star struck, but if I ever met Eminem I might be.

9. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Working for NASA or SPACEX. I don’t know what I’d be doing… but I’d be doing it.

10. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

Fuck yeah, I’d go back to the years 2012-2013 and redo the entire bands’ lineup I was in…

11. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for anyone record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

I’d say I would have loved to be there for the Recording of the album Issues by Korn,  That is one of my all-time faves.
