Every once in a while I am caught side way by a release from an artist I am not familiar with. This is the case with the latest EP, Silver And Gold, dropping February 22, 2019 from Denver, CO based Dearling. After taking a quick spin through the disc when I first got access to a stream didn’t do much to my radar, but once I gave it my undivided attention and took it for another spin, I was hooked. Disc opener “What I Don’t Need” kicks the door down with a killer riff that builds weaves itself into the fabric of the song. The vocals mesh well and help balance the rock quotient of the songs guitar parts with the country-like sound and vibe underneath the mix. As with other tracks on the EP, be sure to check out Dave Preston’s solo and riff in the bridge. “Silver And Gold” slows the pace down and strips back any rock groove and lays a country sound on the listener, with grows in intensity the minute singer / songwriter Rachel James breaks into the verse. The vocals from James and Preston through the verse and chorus are a great combination of different tones and vibe, taking this song to the next level. Again, this song has a cool guitar solo in the bridge that calls to mind a Journey ballad riff. “Champion” features Preston on lead vocals and he uses both his voice and guitar to deliver the lyrics penned by Rachel with precision. The chorus is poignant and beautiful, but the song unfolds when the couple duets on the second verse with harmonies that add depth to the song and give the lyrics punch. Closer “Real Love” takes the song even deeper into country territory with a guitar sound that seems ripped from a lot of Nashville’s songbooks. The tandem vocals are airy and compliment not only each other, but the rest of the musical accompaniment, rounded out by drummer Joel Matthews and bassist Noah Matthews. Depending on your normal musical fare, I would say give this one a shot – this rocker did and can’t wait for the follow up EP…
