10 Quick Ones with SHIM MOORE – August 2018

| 17 August 2018 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “SHIM, as you may know as Shimon Moore, former lead singer of the Sick Puppies, has released a new single and video “Hallelujah” from his forthcoming solo album, coming out this fall. As with every song Shim has written, his blood and intensity is all over it. Following his split from the Sick Puppies in 2015, he pretty much lost everything including his band, money and identity. After being a platinum-selling artist, he went back to square one, and relied only on himself without any collaborators. The result is one of the boldest anthems of his career. Hallelujah is all about digging yourself out and starting the work to move forward.”  We get Shim to discuss the new single and video, influences, and much more in our 10 Quick Ones…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets you put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

There IS an easter egg in the Sock Puppet music video for “Hallelujah.” In the desert scene when Lil Shim is walking alone you can see a half buried ‘FREE HUGS’ sign in the sand. For all the old Sick Puppies fans they will remember that as the first viral YouTube video that put the band on the map.

2. The single “Hallelujah” has a heavy message wrapped into the lyrics – did you find it easy to open yourself to deliver such a personal message?  It seems you referred not only to your situation of starting over as a performer, but also on the current status of music. Was it intentional or an afterthought to ponder whether or not rock is dead?

That theme was referred to in the music video but not so much in the actual song. The song itself was written in a much more stream of consciousness kind of way.

3. Whose vision helped create the video for the single? With an important message being conveyed, was it intentional to lend a little levity to the song and situation with the visuals and you “bandmates”?

I had the initial idea for the video but the people at Sock Puppet parody really helped bring it to life. It wasn’t supposed to convey some big message orginially. It was really just supposed to be a fun video that didn’t take itself too seriously.

4. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember. But I knew I wanted to be a musician after I wrote my first song. It wasn’t very good but I got addicted to creation.

5. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Tom Morello, Brandon boyd, Daniel Johns, John Lennon and Freddy Mercury.

6. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be, and why?

I’m big on vocalists so I would pick Adele. I know it’s lame but shes got one of the best voices in the world right now.

7. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

The creative process.

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

Film director.

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”, even if it didn’t change your current situation?

No.

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Any of the Beatles or Beach Boys records when they were still discovering the recording process.
