10 Quick Ones with DONKEYBOY – April 2018
According to a recent press release: “Top Norwegian pop act Donkeyboy debut their new single “It’ll Be Alright”, which premiered today on Perez Hilton. Their sound is a refreshing musical collision of indie rock and synthpop, the unique mix of the new and the old gives a timeless sense of anthemic pop to much of the band’s music, and this single is no exception. The song was written and produced by brothers Cato and Kent Sundberg, co-founders of Donkeyboy, who brought in Violet Days’ Lina Hansson to help with the lyrics.” We get some answers to our 10 Quick Ones to discuss new music, influences, and more…
1. Tell us a little about your latest release. What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through? Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?
Deep in there, we have a background singer that once won “The voice” in Norway named Martin Halla- That may be a hidden gem!
2. What got you guys into music and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be musicians?
Well, it started as a hobby that took every hour of our spare time; both weekends and evenings. We always wanted to play in a band and make our own music. We originally had other singers because we just wanted to play and make music. Then the singer quit and, just for fun, we made a song with our own vocals. It was that song that ironically started our journey!
3. Who would be your guys’ five musical influences?
Tom Petty, Queen, AC/DC, Michael Jackson, and 2000 songs!
4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?
We would love to do a song with Tom Petty or Freddie Mercury. It is too sad that will never happen.
5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?
Electro-pop with some indie vibes here and there- Nothing too complicated.
6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?
You can get away with anything! Even telling your accountant that you need 4 weeks in Bahamas with your whole family to get inspired!
7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a sing-along?
The drummer cooks, the singer gets the drinks and the guitar player likes the attention at parties so he will get a sing-along going!
8. If you weren’t musicians, what would be your dream jobs?
Movie directors!
9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?
Well, it’s waaaaaay more than one- starting with our first gig!
10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?
Probably Men At work with the song “Down Under” or Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal”.
