Friday night.  Detroit, MI.  Cold and Windy.  This town needs a Super Hero Brother to save the day.  Enter G. Love.  Yes, people, G. Love and Special Sauce decided that our collective musical souls needed saving, and added Detroit as a stop on their 25th Anniversary Tour.  Sporting the original crew, Houseman (Jeffrey Clemens) on drums/vocals, Jimi Jazz (Jim Prescott) on string bass, and, of course, G. Love (Garrett Dutton) on vocals, guitar, and harmonica, the crowd at St. Andrews Hall was treated to a night filled with good time, blues inspired, hip hop R&B.  It’s hard to believe that it’s been 25 years since this trio was first dropping singles off of their self-titled debut.  Fast-forward to 2018, and fans are still being treated to new and varied releases from G. Love, including Love Saves the Day (2015) and a fresh holiday release Coming Home For Christmas (2017).

The show had both electric features, as well as a solo acoustic set with just G. Love throwing down some riffs and blowing on that harp like an established bluesman.  No matter what musical styling of G. Love the crowd came to see, there was something for everyone, and in the right proportions!  From the bookends of the catalog to everything in between, G. Love and Special Sauce treated the crowd with a killer array of originals, but also featured a few special covers, including “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”, which was included in his Fixin’ to Die release.  Classic favorites such as “Who’s Got the Weed”, “Cold Beverage” and “Baby’s Got Sauce” riled up the crowd, but, G. Love also managed to squeeze in a new single “Cape Cod Winter Blues” from his latest, aptly singing “It’s freezing cold.  No one’s around.  I’m walking down Main Street in Detroit town”.  And it wouldn’t be a G. Love dance party unless “Booty Call” wasn’t somewhere on the setlist!

25 years?  Yep, these boys got it down.  G. Love and Special Sauce have yet to disappoint this life long fan.  With a solid set of party time favorites and a steady stream of positive music super powers, Love Saved the Day…
