Some legends don’t tour like they used to – or never get the opportunity to tour properly in the U.S. One such performer is the Metal Queen herself, Doro Pesch. The last time she was scheduled to run through Detroit she fell ill and had to cancel. Since then she has played a handful of dates across the country, but when it was announced Detroit would be one of five special shows scheduled to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Warlock’s Triumph And Agony release, I couldn’t wait for the the show, which would include not only Warlock guitarist Tommy Bolan, but the complete discs tracklist being played in addition to other Warlock classics.
Not much can be said about a show that features Doro’s powerful band as well as the original guitarist that performed the classics on Triumph And Agony back in 1987, other than this was a KILLER show full of great rock songs, tons of energy, and of course one of the best metal voices out there today. To watch Doro work the crowd into a frenzy is a site to behold. We all know the legend and have seen countless videos and heard the songs a millions times, but to be in the crowd as she takes you on a journey back 30 years to what she still considers one of her best albums and performances was mind blowing. To hear songs like “I Rule the Ruins” and “East Meets West” lives were awesome. With her band flanking her with Tommy Bolan on guitars to her left and bassist Nick Douglas and guitarist Luca Princiotta to her right and Johnny Dee killing it on drums behind her, Doro moved seamlessly through the albums stellar tracks and then moved into other Warlock territory, forgoing her solo catalog for the evening. The classics “Für Immer” and “All We Are” elicited the expected results, but the packed crowd in front of the stage seemed to come unhinged when, by request, the band broke into “Wacken Hymne (We Are the Metalheads).” Another fun moment was when Doro and her band played through a slightly reworked version of Judas Priest’s “Breaking The Law.” Some of these songs had never been played before this short tour, and most likely being heard live in Detroit for the first time, but songs like “Make Time For Love” and “Kiss Of Death” were built for the stage and added punch to the already exciting show. While the tour stateside may be over, this won’t be the last time to see Doro here or anywhere else – she still has tons of music and even more live performances inside of her waiting to be unleashed… until then my friend… keep working on that live version of “Lucille”!!!
