Tim Bastmeyer’s potent Robert Johnson-inspired guitar playing is central to this all-star album of authentic Delta blues, and whilst his band are less-known to us in Australia, there’s little doubt of their cred: Juno Award winners Julian Fauth and James Thomson, Juno nominees Paul Reddick and Sean Pinchin, and Cam de Latt.
The resulting mix isn’t all about Bastmeyer’s superb playing: the laconic vocals, the boogie woogie piano, the sparse – almost threadbare – bluesy arrangements, the country inflections and Cash-like storytelling on What That Woman Does To Me, the jazz touches here and there – most notably on instrumental Funky Ten – all add texture and heart and soul to the album.
