10 Quick Ones with JOHN SALMON of HOGAN’S GOAT – June 2017

| 13 June 2017 | Reply

According to a recent press release: “Nashville, TN based, Hard Rock Band Hogan’s Goat has released the first single, “Shit Kicker,” off of their debut, self-titled album. Due out July 18th, Hogan’s Goat was self-produced, mixed by Alex Gilson and Nathan Zensen at Gold Cassette and mastered by Tommy Dorsey.” We get John Salmon (with a little help from the rest of the band) to answer our 10 Quick Ones about the new disc, his influences, and more…

1. Tell us a little about your latest release.  What might a fan or listener not grab the first or second time they listen through?  Are there any hidden nuggets the band put in the material or that only diehard fans might find?

We just released our debut single, “Shit Kicker.” Two of us are from Billings, Montana originally, and this song was written as a kind of homage to the city.  There’s a sort of “stand your ground” mentality there, and we think the song mirrors that.

2. What got you into music, and can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to be a musician?

I think it might be difficult for all of us to answer that, but for me, it was seeing the Guns N’ Roses VH1 Behind The Music.  I still watch it once every couple of months. – John

3. Who would be your main five musical influences?

Well, there are 5 of us so…

  • John (Vocals) – Chris Cornell
  • Wayne (Drums) – “Put the sound of rain for mine.”
  • Thomas (Guitars) – Stevie Wonder
  • Donovan (Guitars) – The Cult
  • Aaron (Bass) – James Jamerson

4. If you could call in any one collaborator to do a song with, who would it be?

Doesn’t say it has to be a musician so personally I think it’d be sick to do a song with Pekka Rinne. Go Preds! – Wayne

5. How would you describe your music to someone who’d never listened to you before?

I like to call it Southern hard Rock N’ Roll; Whiskey soaked Gravel Metal

6. What’s the best thing about being a musician?

The ability to create timeless art for the ages, of course. – Aaron

7. When the band are all hanging out together, who cooks; who gets the drinks in; and who is first to crack out the acoustic guitars for a singalong?

Really the only singalong-ing that happens is when we turn on Brooks & Dunn and/or Jewel. “My Maria” is a personal fave. – Wayne

8. If you weren’t a musician, what would be your dream job?

We couldn’t imagine ourselves not playing music. However, we’d probably all be NASCAR drivers, professional bass fishermen, or in the NBA. – Dono

9. Looking back over your career, is there a single moment or situation you feel was a misstep or you would like to have a “do over”?

I wouldn’t say our career has had enough longevity to endure any missteps. – Thomas

10. If you could magically go back in time and be a part of the recording sessions for any one record in history, which would you choose – and what does that record mean to you?

Appetite For Destruction. I’m not willing to give Axl the axe, though. I’d just prefer to sit in on it. – John
