As a music journalist in the 1960s with the likes of Melody Maker and Disc, and a record label guy with such greats as A&M, Tamla Motown, Warner and especially EMI, where he was Head Of Press dealing with The Beatles’ solo projects, you’d assume Brian Southall would have loads of insider information about the making of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – considered by many to be the best pop album ever made.

If he does, he’s keeping much of it to himself. This book – split into two distinct halves, Side A dealing with the album itself, and Side B with the times the album was released into – does serve as a wonderful, loving introduction to the album for anyone new to it, and with Sgt Pepper’s still sounding as vital and relevant today as it did fifty years ago, there are plenty of kids yet to hear it or read about it.

There’s less for old fans of The Beatles and their ground-breaking record, though. Some might find it a little pedestrian, in fact, but no offence to Southall: he is thorough and passionate in his writing, it’s just that we’ve read all about the album many times before.
