Gracing the newly renovated Rosemount Hotel – they’ve moved the stage to a more central location and shifted the bar from the middle of the room to the side, and it’s way better: well done – Nick Oliveri is in town for his “No Hits at All” Australian death acoustic tour. If I’m not mistaken this is the second time Oliveri has toured Perth in this format.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to catch opener PUCK, but made it just in time to see The Southern River Band. Being the first time i have seen these guys, i was impressed with their great energy! Callum Kramer is a charismatic frontman who reminds me of Angus Young crossed with Jack Black from School of Rock – and I don’t mean that in a piss-take way at all! Well executed songs done with a bit of tongue in cheek banter, they had all the bravado yet at the same time didn’t take themselves too seriously either, even with frontman Callum’s one-piece tasselled white jumpsuit. Nice! These guys played some seriously high octane throwback ’70s rock and did it well. You’d do well to check ’em out if that’s your cup of tea, they’re highly entertaining and got a great response from the crowd.

Nick Oliveri mounted the stage and delivered what I can only describe as a one-man acoustic punk rock show. Stripped back it may have been, Nick screamed his way though a variety of songs from his impressive back catalogue of material he has written in various projects over the years. Queens Of The Stone Age’s Feel Good Hit Of The Summer was done with help from those in attendance, invited by Oliveri to come on stage and help him sing/ party with him on this one.

Nick was just having fun tonight, and was definitely far from polished, making for a dangerous set, with an element of not knowing what was going to happen next – and that’s what works in this setting.

It was a different set-up tonight, where Nick played in the middle of the support bands, leaving local band The Floors to follow him with a short set before Oliveri joined them to close the night out with some Kyuss tunes. It was actually a tough spot for The Floors to be in as the crowd were obviously there to see Oliveri, but they played a tight and effective set.

It was an interesting concept, gig wise – we definitely saw something different, and it was entertaining seeing a stoner rock legend in such an intimate setting.
