The Cheap Cassettes’ lo-fi, scuzzed up indie punk rock is a throwback to the heady days of yore, before music was digitally sanitised and over-produced. There’s no chance of that here – the Seattle trio are super real, all meaty riffs and melodic vocals, in their scuffed and frayed around the edges glory.
The title track shows The Cheap Cassettes have a slightly neurotic side; Good And Shitty and Get Low boast a raucous garage edge; Disappear With You’s vocal melodies hint at the presence of The Beatles on their tape decks; while My Little Twin and Seconds Of Pleasure have a sparser, rawer edge to their post-punk, power-pop vibe, a la The Knack and The Romantics.
As an added bonus – albeit a slightly ironic one – the album finishes with Black Vinyl, a great ode to records from a band named after home taping. Good times!
