CD REVIEW: SIN CAMINO – Without A Path [EP]

With 2017 upon us, new music is heading our way… I love hearing what my favorites have been up to in the studio, as well as discovering some gems from bands and artists I am not familiar with.  The Without A Path EP from Sin Camino is the first new material I am reviewing for the year, and if this is any indicator, this should be a good year.  The short disc opens with “Wake Up Call” and it draws you in with its subdued tempo and texture.  The guitars and vocals lull you with a sense of security, even as the song moves towards a fuzzed chorus.  The rhythm section anchors the track and gives the song a great foundation.  “1950” takes the lead as set forth on the opening track, but offers up a guitar sound and bass meets drum bottom end that points more toward jazz and fusion through the verse and into the chorus.  The murky sound is premeditated and helps build the song as it heads to the bridge.  “Arrhythmia” is a different track in that it swirls some piano into the mix and takes on a milder heavy metal feel at the chorus.  The different vibe of this track drew me in once the guitars turned the energy up at the chorus and bridge.  Disc closer “Opened Up” kicks off with a beautiful acoustic sound that builds as the song progresses, without taking the song into heavier territory.  The track wraps the other songs into a beautiful bundle that prompts you to hit play and listen to these four songs again from the top hoping to grab more of the musical nuances that appear on the EP.
