Once in a while a CD shows up that I am not initially drawn to, but after a few spins, I appreciate the songs and sound a more than first thought. The latest from Them, a tour-edition CD is one of those discs. This three track collection is a preliminary feel of the bands upcoming full-length release. Disc opener “Forever Burns” has a ton of furiously played riffs soaring through the mix while breakneck speed drums anchor the track. The vocals range from heavy laden metal to high range vocals (think King Diamond). “Dead Of Night” brings a more mainstream rock sound and feel to the short collection, with a chugging riff that carries the intro and sweeps into the verse. The vocals are consistent with the first track and helps deliver the message of the lyrics. The chorus is solid and chunky, featuring killer vocals. “Blood From Blood” closes the short disc and brings some great guitars along with a killer rhythm section of pounding drums and punishing bass lines that anchor the track. The vocals are a little heavier and more aggressive than the other two tracks, but these three songs demonstrate the different sounds and grooves that should be on the full length when it is released later this summer.
