Hungarian retro rockers Ozone Mama make a tremendously beardy noise on their third album Sonic Glory, tapping into a ‘70s groove with plenty of blues, riff rock, and spacey Hawkwind-like soloing.

There’s nothing in the music to denote their Eastern Bloc origins – even Márton Székely’s vocals sound more American (and seventies), with no discernible accent on almost all of the tracks. If anything it’s the lyrics here that let the band down a little, with generic stories of Good Times Rolling, Backdoor Men, Gypsy Girls, Hard Times and the like across the board. Put it down to English being their second language, perhaps, or a long-held obsession with the sort of ‘70s rock where these tales were commonplace (and not as clichéd).

That aside, there’s nothing to fault the music, which rocks solidly from start to finish, harkening back to a time when hair was long, beards were de riguer, and riffs were bigger than Texas.
